Original title: Dzięki niemu żyjemy
A documentary about a WW2 German Army officer Wilhelm Hosenfeld stationing in occupied Poland since September 1939 until his capture by the Soviet Army.
Being a Nazi officer, Hosenfeld acted against German racial policy trying to save as many people as possible. Among those he saved was Władysław Szpilman, a renowned pianist and composer, known as the protagonist of Polanski’s “The Pianist”.
The documentary features interviews with Hosenfeld’s children describing him as a father and a husband, presenting his private letters, pictures and fragments of his diaries.
Hosenfeld died in Soviet captivity in 1952 despite Polish and Jewish citizens’ petitions on his behalf. In October 2007 Hosenfeld was posthumously honoured with a Commander’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta and recognized as a Righteous Man Among the Nations.
