The General - the Gibraltar Assassination

Program type: historical fiction feature film
Running time: 90'
Original title: Generał. Zamach na Gibraltarze

The film offers a solution to one of the biggest puzzles of World War 2, one that for many years split historians across the world into separate camps, as well as put many politicians in an uncomfortable position.

65 years were needed in order to pose a credible hypothesis, based on documentary evidence which has been collected for years. According to the official version of events, general Władysław Sikorski, the Prime Minister of the government in exile in London, died on 4 July 1943. A Liberator AL 523 plane with general Sikorski aboard fell into the sea after a take-off from an airport at the British base. All passengers except for the pilot died, and the cause of the crash was supposed to be a technical failure of the aircraft – jam of altitude rudders. Such version of events raised doubts from the very start but nobody could reach the truth. Every now and then, different theories surrounding the death of the general would pop up. A version blaming it on the British was the most common one. The fact that British authorities were not only unwilling to make all documents related to the death of general Sikorski available, but additionally extended the period of making them classified – until 2050, added to the hypothesis.

The General actually shows that games, behind-the-scene deals and mechanisms which govern the world of ‘high politics’ will remain unchanged. In the contemporary world, we often seek ‘enemies of state’ elsewhere, while – as history suggests – we forget or are not willing to remember that they are also among us.
