His role in transforming the political landscape of his own country and his leadership to an end of the Cold War and ushering in a new ear of global collaboration is hard to underestimate.  2011 saw him entering his 80th decade- a fitting moment to highlight his historical contribution, both for generations who witnessed the extraordinary events which he presided over and for younger generations who deserves a closer understanding of what took place.
